Intersect Strengthens Open Source Strategy with Hyperledger Foundation Membership

6 min

We are thrilled to announce that Intersect, the member-based organization dedicated to the Cardano ecosystem, has joined the Hyperledger and Linux Foundations. This announcement was made during the Consensus event in Austin, Texas, marking a significant milestone in our journey toward open-source innovation and collaboration.

A New Chapter in Open-Source Development

Intersect's membership in the Hyperledger Foundation allows us to tap into a wealth of knowledge and resources, enhancing our open-source initiatives for the Cardano community. As a pivotal institution within the Cardano ecosystem, Intersect unites companies, developers, and individuals to shape the future of blockchain technology. Since our formation in July 2023, we have been dedicated to advancing open-source projects, with notable achievements such as the Cardano Repository Migration at the end of 2023.

Hyperledger Foundation was founded in 2015 to bring transparency and efficiency to the enterprise market by fostering a thriving ecosystem around open-source blockchain software technologies. As a project of the Linux Foundation, Hyperledger Foundation coordinates a community of member and nonmember organizations, individual contributors, and software developers building enterprise-grade platforms, libraries, tools, and solutions for multi-party systems using blockchain, distributed ledger, and related technologies. Organizations join the Hyperledger Foundation to demonstrate technical leadership, collaborate and network with others, and raise awareness around their efforts in the enterprise blockchain community. Members include industry-leading organizations in finance, banking, healthcare, supply chains, manufacturing, technology and beyond. All Hyperledger code is built publicly and available under the Apache 2.0 license.

Collaborating with Industry Leaders

By joining the Hyperledger Foundation, Intersect joins an esteemed group of developers, enterprises, and organizations committed to building and enhancing blockchain frameworks and tools. We look forward to collaborating with industry giants like IBM, Visa, and American Express to drive the future of decentralized blockchains. Christian Taylor, head of the Open Source Office at Intersect, said:

Joining the Hyperledger Foundation marks a pivotal moment forIntersect. As a member-based organization for the Cardano ecosystem, joining Hyperledger Foundation is a reflection of our commitment to shaping the future of the Cardano blockchain with open-source innovation at the heart. Together with our members, we embark on a journey to redefine possibilities, drive collaboration, and advance the boundaries of decentralized and open technology.

Looking Ahead: Strengthening Our Open Source Strategy

In the coming months, Intersect’s open-source strategy will continue to progress, strengthened by the knowledge and best-practice sharing from the Hyperledger community and other ongoing internal work. One part of this work is being completed by the Open Source Committee (OSC), which has the goal that towards the end of 2024, all Intersect-maintained Cardano projects will have been audited based on theproject lifecycle framework, on factors such as sustainability and their risk mitigation strategy.

This initiative will assess the maturity of Intersect-owned projects, thereby distinguishing those performing well, those needing support to improve, and those slated for deprecation. The opportunity for Intersect members to collaborate with prestigious Hyperledger Foundation members on wider ecosystem projects will mean open-source development can continue within Intersect and Cardano’s core repositories at the highest level possible. Daniela Barbosa, Executive Director, Hyperledger Foundation, and General Manager, Blockchain and Identity, at the Linux Foundation had this to say about the membership announcement.

Intersect's commitment to open source and focus on governance are well aligned with Hyperledger Foundation's mission to foster a thriving ecosystem around open source blockchain software technologies. We look forward to working with the Intersect community to champion open source development as a core requirement for decentralized trust technologies and deployments.
