Celebrating a Milestone: Concluding the Cardano Constitutional Convention and Looking Ahead to an On-Chain Vote
It has been an intensive few months for the Cardano community, culminating in last week’s Constitutional Convention held simultaneously in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Nairobi, Kenya, from December 4th to 6th. This convention was crucial in our journey towards decentralized governance and a fully ratified Cardano Constitution.
For the 450 convention participants, including 63 elected delegates representing 51 countries, the objective was clear: to deliberate upon and approve the draft version of the Cardano Constitution, which you can find on our knowledge base. The outcome: an overwhelming majority of 95% of delegates voted in favor of the draft Constitution, paving the way for an on-chain vote by DReps.
How the Convention unfolded
Read about how the week unfolded in our weekly report, and don’t forget that you can still watch all the proceedings on the dedicated Constitutional Convention website. Don’t forget to keep an eye on it as we update it with more on the full journey of Cardano through its eras from inception to decentralization, image galleries from events in Nairobi and Buenos Aires, and lots more!
'The yes vote by the delegates touched me to the soul. I consider the constitution as valuable as I consider my own national constitution and I hope it is the foundation and starting point for future governance developments.' Eystein Magnus Hansen, Civics Committee and Intersect Constitutional Council member
Thanking The Community and Delegates
This accomplishment is a testament to the dedication and cooperation of countless individuals and groups. Over 1,400 community members have read, engaged with, and provided valuable and meaningful feedback that helped shape the now delegate-approved Constitution. We extend our gratitude to each delegate and alternate for their commitment and the effort they invested in representing their communities.
‘126 strangers from 50 countries came together to ratify the Cardano Blockchain Ecosystem Constitution, forging new friendships and making history—an incredible testament to Charles’ vision and the strength of our community.’ - Nathan Barkell, delegate - Perth, Western Australia
Next Steps towards decentralized governance - over to the DReps
The journey does not end here, though. The Cardano community, via its delegated representatives (DReps) will soon decide whether to fully ratify the delegate-approved Constitution on-chain, which is expected in January 2025. The process of delegating ada to DReps allows any ada holder to participate in the decentralized decision-making process that underpins the blockchain’s social contract; in this case, the first-of-its-kind Cardano Constitution that will underpin Cardano’s decentralized governance and security long into the future.
To this end, it is now vital that both DReps and ada holders who delegate their ada to them understand their roles and responsibilities in the crucial next step to ratifying the Constitution. And Intersect is here to help. We will…
- run online educational workshops on the role of DReps, the importance of delegation, and how to delegate your ada
- facilitate ‘DReps and constitutional delegates’ X spaces where you can hear directly from DReps and more from delegates who voted on the constitution in Buenos Aires and Nairobi
- keep posting on our socials and blog, so don’t forget to check back for lots more educational content
Intersect is here to support Cardano’s governance framework and help inform ada owners of the key milestones that are coming up. We focus on building a transparent and inclusive governance system for the Cardano ecosystem.
The work accomplished so far demonstrates the strength of collaboration and discourse. We encourage all community members to stay engaged and informed as we prepare for the next phase of advancing Cardano’s global network.
